The Ripper Engine Removal

March 5, 2010

Adam and The Professor get going on yanking the motor out of the Ripper. The Ripper is Sandy’s 1965 Fastback Mustang road race car. We take a peek at the new engine and transmission and here the big plan. We also take some time off for phone calls and a restart of celebrity first cars by fittingly bringing back Christoph Waltz’s First Car to kick off the Oscar’s (He is a shoe in!)

        SANDY,

THIS OFFER IS FREE TO YOU GUYS, DUE TO ALL OF THE FREE POD CAST YOU HAVE BROUGHT US . I KNOW THE #9 WAREHO– USE HAS A SECRET LOCATION, BUT IVE ALREADY BEEN THERE. LET ME KNOW IF YOU WOULD LIKE MY HELP. KEEP UP THE GREAT JOB. SCOTT

    Sandy,
What’s going on with the server problems that we can download the new Carcast but not the last three Podcasts?
On the subject of cars, what do you and Adam think about the old Volvo P1800S?
    Thanks,
    Dave

I think your asking why is the CarCast files OK and not the regular ACP Podcast? Well easy, the CarCast, and all other shows except for ACP are on a different system, not the CeeBS system that has caused us some problems over the last couple of weeks. Some old carcast episodes may have been affected but I have reset all of the older CarCast, now just need to update the links in the CarCastSite.

Ace and Sandy, (and Donny of course)
Two things- the car Leno was driving looks like an Ariel Atom. A guy here in Indy has one and it looks like a real blast. Until a semi doesn’t notice you. Then not so much.

My second comment is for your caller Reeve who wanted your opinion on a Ferrari 348. I’m also in the market for a mid-engined Ferrari, although I’m not looking to use it to pick up chicks, I’m fulfilling a childhood dream (I’m happily married and want to stay that way). One thing to remember about about the 348, F355, 512bbi, Testarossa, 512TR and the 512M is that they all require the engine to be removed for a major servicing. While this only needs to be performed every 5 years or 15,000 miles, for a 348 it runs around $6,000 at an independent shop, and a Testarossa can average around $10-$12,000 just to get it serviced. Double these numbers at a Ferrari dealer. I know that none of these numbers are absolutes, but I have done A LOT of research on this subject. The one thing that holds true no matter who I have talked to is that if you can’t afford an expensive Ferrari, you for sure won’t be able to afford a cheap one. The result of deferred maintenance can cost double what the maintenance would have cost in the first place.

If your heart is set on a mid-engined Ferrari (Like mine is), you may want to look at either a 308/328 which, because their engines are in sideways you can get at the belts and they don’t have to come out for service, or a newer (and more expensive) 360 which has an access panel to get at the timing belts. Beware the clutch on a flappy-paddle 360, though, as they can cost $4,000 to replace, and they wear quicker than a clutch in a three pedal car.

From what I’ve learned in my research, most Ferrari’s are pretty reliable, (except some early 348’s and F355’s) but the service is expensive, and if you defer the service you can be driving along and all of a sudden be hit with a $15,000 repair bill.

So I hope this helps; I’ve been doing a ton of research since I sold my Z06 and decided to get a car with a ‘startled horse’ on the nose. Now that the snow is melting, I guess it’s time to stop shopping and actually go and buy the car I’ve picked out.

Yep, it was an Ariel Atom, Ace couldn’t get it out. Not a huge fan of the car, looks like with a good welder and tubing bender and a junkyard salvage run could make one up. Right on with the Prancing horse numbers, I think I was too conservative on the service costs. Bottom line is that it’s almost absurd for the cost of a service, but if you can’t pay, you can’t pay. And for mid engine I would hit up an R8 over the Prancing horse, or learn how to drop and engine out of one and do the work yourself if you can get the parts…

It doesn’t really matter when all said and done. It’s just as easy to buy a “Map of the Stars” to find out the same information. We typically do it when requested. No one has…

It’s featured in almost every episode 😉 Soon I think. We need to have it on after all we talked about it!

Also, love the ripped car cover. Reminds me using plastic tarps to cover cars out in the field. Works for one month then either blows away or tears off.

    Sandy, Sandy, Sandy…

What is this weird fascination with putting condoms over beautiful precision stainless lines, dude? Did your Dad beat you with stainless braid when you were a kid or something? Your engine bay looks like it’s full of intestines. Sad, sad, sad.

Don’t use the ‘it’s flash” argument. Just look inside the motor compartment of a helicopter, or jet. All stainless thousand dollar fittings and braid. That’s the ultimate in engineering beauty, not for show, just all ‘go.’

I’m teasing, but seriously, man. You need help.

Stainless is beautiful, well, except on the hoses in my cars 🙂

And I’ll bet you will find lots of fire shield under the hood of a chopper, well were it matters I guess…

Yes, you’re not the first one that mentioned the “I need help” on the braided steel lines, but I like the orange silicone stuff, adds a bit of color, easy to clean, and just odd enough to have that makes it something I like. When all said and done I think it cost as much as the hose itself.

Hmm, you just gave me a great idea, I can use it to run the sparkplug wires in it too, as well as the rest of the wiring harness. Man, I know this CarCast think would help with my car projects!

In all seriousness, hope you at least enjoyed the shows, more hack job working coming soon!

Please PLEASE have this guy on CarCast.

He hand built a Lombo Countach in his basement. No Lambo parts, I mean he hand fabricated every piece, except the crate engine of course. It’s an amazing story, heard it on the radio a couple months ago.

Keep up the excellent work. Can’t wait for Top Gear.

If you’re ever in the Baltimore area, you have a behind the scenes tour of NASA Goddard Space Flight Center where I work. Drop me an email.
