Flat plane crank shafts have the rod journals at 180 degrees from each other (like a typical 4 cylinder) while cruciform crankshafts (like in American V8s are at 90 degrees. All rod journals are on the same plane hence the term flat plane. All Ferrari V8s use flat plane cranks. That is why their V8s sound so different that American V8s, It is easier to make a V8 with a flat plane crank breath (unless you use 180 degree headers ie a bundle of snakes).
IIRC, the US big blocks use the flat plane cranks, but the small blocks sound different because they use a different style crank along with a different firing order. On MOPAR, the big block cylinders alternate one cylinder per bank through the entire order. Small blocks, like the 318, alternate but part of the firing order 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2, 8 and 4 are on the same bank as are 5 and 7, so you have two places in the order where two reports in a row are coming from the same side. http://www.mymopar.com/index.php?pid=114
