1949 Chevrolet Deluxe

August 11, 2010

This weeks featured car is Cleto Escobedo’s 1949 Chevrolet Deluxe. Cleto found this car on the way home and picked up for a song. Cleto plays sax in Jimmy Kimmel’s band and Cleto’s son is the band leader. Well the kind heart of Jimmy and his son restored his car and presented it in a surprise at hot rod night at Bob Big Boy in Burbank.

What a gorgeous car! Nice work with the photos too. I really dig looking at them while I listen to Carcast. I love the old Italian and German exotics on the show, but what a great old car this is.

    Adam:
What’s with your garage “named” Number 9. What’s the story….. something to do with the Beatles song or ? I’m just a curious “Shmoe.” I’ve got a ‘vette with vintage decals on it. Not all over like a Nascar Shmoe would have. Just to the left of the right front wheel well. I’m in the TMPCC, so you may see it someday. Back to the decals. I thought placing vintage oval number “9” on the door panels as numbers are required for some competitions. With the Beatle song in mind. Anyhow, I’m a car nut and a fan of you and the “Professor’s” Car Cast site.

    Thanks, Shep

P.S. Nice looking Chevy by the way. I recall as a kid in the SFV, my father had a similiar car. Took out the rear seat to carry lumber, etc. Sort of a prototype for the Chevy Avalanche in the early 60’s.

Well the #9 and the color scheme is from the Ford GT40 Gulf Oil car of Pedro Rodríguez. He was a champion driver and drove the GT40 to a LeMans victory in 1968. Me and Donny love the car and the color scheme so we chose it for the warehouse. Hint, if you poke around the site enough you might find my GT40 (Kit, replica, recreation, remastered) version of the car.

The “Professor” couldn’t come up with when the Small Block Chevy came out? Not even the year? C’mon, Sandy. You’ve got a Cobra kit with a BBC in it, for F sakes! BTW, put a Grand Sport body on that & it’ll be a lot more socially acceptable! Oh, & that Stovebolt 6 (Blue Flames were in ’53 & ’54 Vettes) was either a 216 or 235 in ’49.

Hey, I don’t have instant recall like the Ace man, and SBC is not a motor I use or really like so it’s not on my radar. BBC released in ’65 that’s what I know 😉 On the Cobra, sadly when I found the Herb Adams VSE chassis I liked they didn’t have a GS body only a Cobra. Years later he did do one but by then too late. The GS would have been really slick (and my preference) to the oceans of Cobra kit/tribute/replica/remastered cars that you now see.

I grew up right around the corner from Jimmy & Cleto and grew up with this car. I always loved it! EC.

I am from the Detroit area and happend to stumble upon (literaly) the original lower/female stamping die, for either the front or rear matching winged emblem shown in your pictures of the 1949 Chevy above. Like many people in Detroit, I am doing everything I can to keep my business affloat, and unfortunatly that means parting ways with anything of value to keep my dream alive. When I saw the kind gesture that Jimmey K. and Cleto’s son did for his dad, it made me think of how great it would be, to see my piece of Motor City history go to someone who would cherish it as much as I have, since tripping on it, and falling on my a**, in a Detroit scrap metal yard 12 yrs ago. If you are interested in posting some pictures on your site just for show, or might be able to help me find a good home for this 1 of a kind hunk of steel, please respond to the email address that I have included. Thank You and I look forward to your response.
