The Ripper Test Run

October 16, 2010

Video of first test run at Willow Springs, the Streets. Car ran good except for a smokey engine problem. Engine definitely needs to come out for a tear down as something is not quite right. Ran good otherwise, and gearbox was a vast improvement over the TKO that was removed.

Note first lap was a warm up, skip to 5:00 minute mark that’s the start of the actual testing. And as always with The Ripper, PLAY LOUD

cool, i liked the whole thing. looked like those porsches were slower in the turns than you had previously been running. not the whaletail one tho. ripper motor sounds real nice. looks like it handles well.

Their were some fast ones with fat tires and a turbo I think, they did well. Couple of the guys were instructors that pulled by me, so yank me out and put in a better driver would be a different story 😉 Had a blast at the event in any case, all the people were really nice and will go out with them again.

The track maps can be found off the Willow Springs Racetrack site ( http://www.willowspringsraceway.com/trackinformation/StreetLg.htm ) For top speed, hard to say in the short straight maybe a crack over 100, not sure. Was in 3rd near the limiter, speedo was melted too many times, just gave up and the new trans has no place for one since it’s a race box, so RPM and the Gear Calculator is the best guess. It’s a very short and tight track. For times, watch the video, click the stopwatch at 2 known points an you will have it 😉

The later laps are faster, I think somewhere in the 1:32 range, sadly the run after this was even better but some dumb ass forgot to turn on the cameras…

Would’ve been nice to see ya get’r out of Second gear, but that sure looks like a lot of fun!
And that ford motor sounds amazing! Love the sequential box too!

It’s a hard running motor for sure. I’m not getting paid enough for a sequential box, it’s a more conventional straight cut gear box out of Nascar type of cars. This is a tight short track and a lot of fun to drive since this car can be driven with the gas pedal, not sure that’s the fastest way around, but I have a lot of fun with it.

Well thats all you can ask of a good track car! Fun, and lots of it. There’s definitely no shortage of that with a bitchin’ Vintage track car.
See if you can sweet talk the track steward next time, and get out on the big track so we can hear ya really open’r up 😉
Anyways, Thanks for the video Ganz, and keep’m comin’!

Thanks, was ready for the big track with a couple of events already lined up, but have to yank the motor due to an oil issue. Better to be safe then sorry since it’s a costly rebuild if something lets loose. Going to get some ContourHD’s also fitted for some sharper video.

damn…that tranny sounds sweet! i love that whine. If I ever get to build an engine i’m putting in a geared timing set rather than a chain…..sposed to have more of that whine sound, and gears don’t stretch either.

    Sandy as american stig?

    1. CarCast Post author

Definitely not the Stig, but I’ll wear a Halloween mask next time if that makes people happy!

Skip the exercise on the noisy timing gear set. Did one once and it was not worth the trouble. Watch out for poorly machined surfaces on them, and if on a SBC these can eat up a timing cover if not set up right. I had done on in my IH Scout with a SBC 377″ (De-stroked 400) and had an oil leak within a week of install. After really looking at the surfaces that rub against the timing cover (the idler gears) they were not smooth and had a ‘mill’ effect to the cover, block had marks and was only slightly better.

I run a good chain in the Ford and a Jessel Belt Drive on the BBC, and don’t think I would go back to the gear…

P.S. I know you are going to try it so just make sure that all the sharp edges and surfaces are smooth before install (Get some 400 Wet/Dry and clean it up, then wash all the crap out before install)

I’ll leave you with this quote from the original Death Race 2000 as a thought –

“[Press] Is it true Mr. Frankenstein you can shift faster then a 60th of a second…
      [Mr. Frankenstein] No comment”

      And thanks for the comments!

Yep, we are stuffing them in Adam’s 610 for races, and I have some older technology ChaseCam’s that I’m going to sell I think. They are more trouble then they are worth and the ContourHD’s have much much nicer picture quality for the most part, and are way more convenient. And don’t ask about how much the ChaseCam vs. ContourHD cost is… Look at the video from the 610 races and the Ripper video Day and night. Hands down best bang for the buck.

    Ganz,

What size motor did you guys drop into this guy? I always thought it would be cool to put the 4.0 M3 V8 into one of these cars and have a 8500 redline monster! BTW, carcast is the best ACE broadcasting product by far.

    1. CarCast Post author

This is a 331 (5.4L) Redline is right at 8000. The 4 cammed V8’s are way wider then the tiny SBF which is a tight fit with headers so expect to do some front suspension work and remove the shock towers.

Now get to work on it 😉

Ahhhh, I totally forgot how small the engine compartment was on these old stangs.

Are you working on any big projects for Adam right now? WHEN IS THE LISTENER TRACK EVENT HAPPENING???? haha, I know you guys must get a shit load of questions about when this is going to happen. Thanks again.

We had it on the calendar for last April 1st. But we couldn’t muster all the stuff needed to get it going. Going to try again as soon as I get the motor out and back in the car. I would hate to have to borrow a car for our own event 😉
